·    The motif of the drowning girl – in the painting, in Fran’s story, in Amy’s story and finally in Sophie’s story. Sophie pictures herself drowning on page 344. Ruby’s suicide is echoed by that of Blue.

- Sophie thinking of her great-aunt Ruby while she was standing on the bridge, thinking of what she might have been thinking before committing suicide.
·      So you wanted to die? I did. At first anyway.” – Mr. Shmitt/Sophie (P.344)  - Sophie talking about her feelings and how she felt like dying which links back to her great-aunt Ruby committing suicide.
·      “The title, Ruby’s Point, at the bottom is the only part of the painting that stays the same for me.” – Sophie (P.73)
- Sophie makes the painting out to be very mysterious when it’s first mentioned.
·      “We are sorry to inform you that your daughter Ruby has been found drowned in the river. Was history going to repeat itself?” – Fran (P.285)
- Linking the disappearance of Ruby and Sophie together.
·      “I’ve looked at that painting every Christmas and Easter for years…I didn’t know it was a real place – Sophie (P.100)
- Sophie realizing Ruby’s Point is a real place, named after her great-aunt
·      “Blue’s dead…He shot himself through the head.” – Jimmy (P.303)
